Ignorance About Tattoo & Piercing Shops! What Do You Think?

A new business coming the Tri-Cities raises concerns about increased crime. A tattoo and piercing shop is moving to Watauga Avenue in Erwin and Sheriff Kent Harris is not rolling out the welcome mat. He says, “Tattoo and body piercing that’s just something I don’t want here in the county.” Sheriff Harris is concerned the only thing this shop will bring is trouble. “Based on prior experiences with tattoo parlors, the type of people that you’re gonna draw in there, chance are it’s people that may be committing crimes,” says Harris.

The Sheriff’s problems with these parlors come from past experiences. Several years ago one of their largest drug busts involved a tattoo business and it’s owner. “This tattoo parlor became a place for drug trafficking going on,” explains Harris.

Jim Connor is the owner of Ace High Tattoo in Johnson City. He says, “You’re gonna have crime and drug activity no matter where you go, no matter what business you’re in.” Connor says the illegal activity has nothing to do with the business. “This business does invite it, only if the people working there invite it in that’s when you have the problems,” says Connor.

He says the crime and drug stereotype tattooed to their trade is a typical perception, but one he believes is quickly being erased. “You’d be amazed at the people that have tattoos, doctors, lawyers, all the professional fields, every race, creed, breed.”

His and similar businesses are inspected about every three months by the health department.

The owner of the new business moving into Erwin did not want to talk with us on camera.

Winnipeggers are being warned about unsafe body piercing operators after a teenager developed an infection from a nipple piercing.

Health officials say the incident shows how important it is for people to investigate any body modification business before having procedures done.

Dr. Margaret Fast, medical officer with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, is tight-lipped about the particulars of the incident, saying only that three teenagers had piercings done at the home of an unlicensed operator a few weeks ago.

The operation was unsanitary, she said, and the teens were put at significant health risk. The case came to light when one of the teens reported to the city’s Children’s Hospital.

“What brought this particular child to the attention of the emergency department was a bacterial infection. But the infections that we’re also concerned about are the ones that you can’t see, like hepatitis B or hepatitis C,” Fast said.

New bylaw to regulate piercers

The warning comes just weeks before the city implements a new bylaw to control body piercing.

The head of the city’s environmental health services, Brian Rivet, says the bylaw requires all piercers to be licensed, and it will give his inspectors the tools to crack down on operations like the one where the teens were pierced.

“Certainly we would pay attention to that. We’re going to be watching for anybody that’s underground,” he said.

The new bylaw will also require minors to be accompanied by a guardian for any procedure. Fast says parents should talk to kids about body modification and do everything they can to inspect operations ahead of time.

Similar legislation 17 years ago helped clean up the tattoo business in the city, Rivet says, although he pointed out that it’s almost impossible to stop all illegal body modification. –Courtesy Of CBC Manitoba

Parents of children under the age of 16 in Scotland will need to give written permission to allow their offspring to have tattoos or body piercing.

According to the Scottish Executive, the tighter controls will mean that people will have less risk of contracting a bloodborne virus.

The move comes as the Executive published a draft Order on mandatory licensing of the industry to increase hygiene levels and reduce the risk of infections.

Welcoming the move, Health Minister Andy Kerr said: “In businesses such as skin and body piercing, public health and hygiene must be of the highest importance.

“Most tattoo service operators in Scotland already know the dangers of dirty equipment and contaminated dye, but we must be sure that such standards are applied across the country.

“Further controls of skin and body piercing services are appropriate in order to reduce the risk of transmission of bloodborne infection. I am confident that this draft Order will help develop new arrangements for regulating services, while avoiding any unnecessary constraints on businesses.”

The Executive has previously consulted with key stakeholders in public agencies, representative bodies and tattooing and skin and body piercing industry on the principle of possible tighter regulations.

The detail of the Order, drafted under section 44 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982, includes:

A mandatory licensing regime supported by monitoring and non-compliance penalties
The introduction of a requirement for written parental consent for skin and body piercing of children aged less the 16 years.

The Order will come into effect from the April 1 2006 with a transitional period of 12 months for existing businesses to ensure they meet the requirements of the Order. –Coutersy Of 24dash.com
